What are energy blocks and is it possible to get rid of them?

Energy blocks are an accumulation of internalized mind energy that has built up over a long period of time. Whenever our ego systems are challenged, this energy is reactivated and becomes the driving force, or the fuel, of the ego defence. Because internalized mind is an integral part of who we are, it is very difficult, though not impossible, to release it without first becoming conscious of its origin. Even if we were to release the energy through psychic means, unless we address the problem that caused it to be internalized, it would very quickly be replaced with more of the same.

The first step in removing internalized energy is to embark on a path of personal growth with the aid of a guide, therapist or teacher. That person can help us understand who we are and why we have internalized. The learning process that leads to personal growth involves becoming aware of and peeling away the layers of the ego defence, so that the ego can be nourished. This process, sometimes called ‘ego burning,’ can be extremely painful. It causes us to become aware of what Carl Jung called our shadow: our dishonesty, manipulative behaviour, self-centredness — all the personality traits we would prefer not to know we have. At first we may be devastated, wondering how we could possibly have been wrong or bad for so many years. Eventually, however, we learn to see our past actions not as mistakes, but as the best possible choices we could have made, based on the information we had at the time. As we move towards self-acceptance and the ego defence is peeled away, the ego can begin to take   in nourishment, in the form of compliments from others and acknowledgment of our own achievements.

Another way of facilitating personal growth is through a path of spiritual development, although it’s important to realize that not all paths lead to personal growth. Some of the methods that can provide us with the challenge to grow are study, meditation and labour. Each path emphasizes one particular method more than others. At the same time, the teacher may challenge us personally, drawing attention to our habits of thought and behaviour. Although energy release can happen spontaneously during any of these practices, they all require close supervision and regular access to the teacher or her aides.

Release of internalized energy can also be effected by means of a therapeutic relationship in which such disciplines as bodywork, breathing or imaging techniques are used. The process of energy release can be extremely difficult. It may sometimes seem as though the ego defence is screaming in protest, not wanting to let go of the energy, which is,   after all, a part of itself. This is why certain unhealthy patterns of behaviour are hard to change. Often, as the energy is released, new or unfamiliar feelings or behaviours may surface, which the therapist can help us understand.

Whatever methods of growth and energy release we choose, the process may take as much as one year for every six to ten years of life. As we work through it, we need to remember that internalized energy cannot be permanently removed unless we first change the way we think about ourselves and our environment. Only when we stop adding fuel to the internalized mind can we be successful in removing it.
